A rainy day in Newcastle Upon Tyne was to set the scene for an epic battle between 1st and 2nd in the Intra-mural league. ShockSoc Vs FC Bioscilona promised to be a first-rate match, but none could have predicted the feat that was to happen in the university sports hall. Only 3 minutes had pasted before the referee awarded Bioscilona a controversial penalty for a foot in the box. But the boys had no need to worry as Jack Whitehead pulled a great penalty save out of the bag, saving the follow up shot too.  After a spell of early pressure by ShockSoc, they got themselves off too a good start with Bryden lashing his shot between the keeper and the left hand post. The scoreline stayed at 1-0 for a good period of play with ShockSoc not being able to penetrate Bioscilona’s defensive set up, but still managing to hit the post twice. Bryden then doubled his tally with a cracker of a shot from the halfway line which flew down low, leaving the keeper stranded. ShockSoc were no longer comfortable, Bioscilona were playing very well and Hinchliffe and Coapes had there work cut out. As Whiteheads goal was peppered, he still managed to keep them at bay with save after save, unfortunatly this just wasn’t enough with 2 quick goals from Bioscilona after good play and a mistake in the ShockSoc defence. Good play from Danny Sheehan gave ShockSoc a rare free kick just outside the box. Bird stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net to bring the scoreline to 3-2 to the engineers. With only 3 minutes to go, the points were safe, but the visitors brought the game back to 3-3 in the last few seconds of the game.

Final score – ShockSoc 3- 3 Bioscilona

Steve Bryden (2)

James Bird (1)

Shocksoc were eager to keep their excellent start to the season adding another 3 points to their tally. Unfortunately, it did not start well. 5 minutes into the game the boys in black found themselves 2-0 down after sloppy play. Luckily veteran midfield Steve Bryden slotted home after good play from Danny Sheehan to pull one back for the home team. First-class play from seaside riot then made the score line 3-1, leaving Shocksoc feeling a little embarrassed at their lack of effort. Bryden then scored again with a super curling effort into the far post, leaving the goalkeeper helpless. With the rhythm following now, Shocksoc turned it up a gear starting with Sheehan sending a daisy cutter into the bottom corner of the net, despite the pitch being made from daisy-less material. Marshall then added two quick goals to put the engineers in front for the first time in the game. With all the forward play going through Danny Sheehan it was only a matter of time before he scored again, a pinpoint shot into the far post to make the score line 6-3. Shocksoc now were controlling the game and defensive players Sam Hinchliffe and Graeme Coapes both got themselves on the score sheet with clever finishes. Seaside riot were subsequently awarded a controversial penalty which was convert to make the score line 8-4. Shocksoc then decided to kill the game off with Jamie Marshall using his pace well to score two more. Bryden got his 3rd of the match with a cool finish from a tight angle. The final whistle blew with the score at 11-4 to the engineers. Overall a decent match, much was learnt and let’s home Shocksoc wake up in the first 5 minutes next week!

ShockSoc’s first game of the season got off to a flyer with an impressive victory over the Lubers. After a nervy start from both teams good work from Jamie Marshall set up James Bird for a debut goal in the magnificent Newcastle university sports hall. Only 2 minutes later Marshall got himself on the score sheet with a good finish from a tight angle.
